Identifying Wild Mushrooms

If you ever go hunting for wild mushrooms, there is a good chance that you will run into problems identifying some of the mushrooms you find. There are a lot of species of mushrooms so it’s likely that you can’t figure out exactly what type of mushroom you are dealing with all the time. Based on the location of the mushrooms you may be able to get a rough idea of the family or species but you won’t be able to pinpoint the exact mushroom you are dealing with. Within various mushroom families are both psychedelic mushrooms and mushrooms which won’t produce those psychedelic effects so it’s important to know how to identify them or else you might eat mushrooms that aren’t hallucinogens.

Identifying the Mushrooms

This will not be an easy task. The best thing you can do is take one mushroom from every species you find and put it in a different container to be stored for further reference. When you get home you can then observe the mushrooms and look at the patterns, size of various pieces, color, and various other characteristics. You can look at pictures and descriptions of all different types of mushrooms and see if you can find a match. There is a good chance you can get an exact match or a match to the family based on looking at it and comparing to pictures online with your naked eye. There are still some mushrooms that will not be able to be identified without being in a lab though.

It can be difficult because there are a lot of little things you have to look at. There are many different types f mushrooms so you could be looking for hours before you find the match to just one mushroom. Don’t get frustrated though because it is important to know if you are holding a magic mushroom or not and if it is safe to consume and whether it will get you high or not. Just be patient and observe everything about the mushroom while you research for the match.
